Not all home safety improvements are created equal. Some are simple enough to do on your own. Others need a trained hand. And when health or mobility is involved, it’s important to know when to bring in a clinical professional like an occupational therapist (OT).

At Good Company, we’re trained, insured, and elder-aware. We handle the practical, hands-on tasks that make homes safer—and just as importantly, we know when to step back and recommend someone else.

 What Families Can Do Themselves

Some basic safety improvements don’t require a pro:

  • Clear clutter and cords from walkways
  • Add non-slip mats in tubs and showers
  • Install night lights and improve visibility
  • Move everyday items to lower shelves
  • Remove loose rugs and fix poor lighting
  • Label and organize medications in an accessible location

These are all great places to start. But even these small jobs add up fast—and they’re easy to forget or delay when life gets busy. That’s why we include them in our Routine Maintenance Plans. We stay on top of them for you, revisit them regularly, and keep a clear record of what’s been done.

What We Do (and Do Well)

We’re not just here to fix what’s broken. We get to know your home, build long-term familiarity, and help you stay ahead of issues with care and consistency.

Some examples of what we take care of:

  • Installing grab bars, railings, and handheld showers (installed properly to code)
  • Adjusting or replacing fixtures and hardware for accessibility
  • Securing thresholds, loose steps, and flooring transitions
  • Fixing stubborn doors, adjusting closers, or replacing handles
  • Checking airflow, replacing filters, and testing smoke/CO alarms
  • Helping families understand where the real risks are, and what’s next

We also keep detailed records—not just for our own operations, but so families, caregivers, or adult children can stay informed about what’s happening in the home.

In a way, we’re like the old-time rural handyman—someone you can count on to know your home, your family’s needs, and what it takes to keep things safe.
